Institute presentation

The University of Bergen is a strong research university hosting 3370 employees and 14086 students dedicated to advancing research and development of academic disciplines. It has coordinated and participated in many FP6 and FP7 projects and is the most internationally oriented Norwegian university.

The Department of Biomedicine hosts the National technology platforms for proteomics and molecular imaging. The department has excellent equipment and laboratory facilities for functional and animal studies and a strong tradition in interdisciplinary and translational research. The Center for Medical Genetics and Molecular Medicine has state of the art equipment and robotics for Sanger and Next generation sequencing, genotyping and bio-informatics.

The research at Department of Biomedicine is organized into eleven research groups and two technology platforms, and is directed toward studies on basal medical, biomedical and biological problems. The Department also hosts the K.G. Jebsen Centre for Research on Neuropsychiatric Disorders. This interdisciplinary Centre represents a total of four departments and two faculties, in addition to the Centre for Medical Genetics and Molecular Medicine and Division of Psychiatry at Haukeland University Hospital.

The Department of Clinical Science aims to conduct research, guidance and teaching at a high international level in order to achieve the Faculty's vision "new knowledge for better health". The department is one of five institutes under the Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry. The main activities at the department take place in the Laboratory Building at campus. The activities encompass teaching and clinical research within the following fields: Cardiology, Thorax and, Cardiovascular Surgery Respiratory Medicine, Geriatrics, Infectious Medicine, Microbiology, Immunology, Rheumatology, Gynecology, Obstetrics, Pediatrics, Genetics, Endocrinology, Endocrine Surgery, Medical Biochemistry, Hematology, Oncology, Pharmacy as well as Pharmacology.
